Burhanuddin Rabbani

WASHINGTON, DC –Today the United States of America condemned "in the strongest terms" the assassination in Kabul of Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani. Professor Rabbani  had headed the High Peace Council, served as President of Afghanistan and organize University students since 1972; after returning to Afghanistan in 1968.

Kabul University students helped Mr. Rabbani avoid capture in the Spring of 1974 and a conjectured Soviet supported coup in 1979 as President of Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, "We extend our condolences to his family, and to all the people of Afghanistan, including those who were injured, and the families of those who lost their lives."

It is being reported that a suicide bomber ignited a bomb in the home of Mr. Rabbani

The violence and assassination, Secretary Clinton summarized, was a "cowardly attack" . . . by those who will "do all they can to undermine the cause of peace and reconciliation."

We will see more violence before this is over. But the Afghan people will not be deterred from pursuing a more peaceful, democratic future for their country and we will continue to stand with them and support their efforts."
