Washington, DC- On behalf of President Barack Obama and the people of the United States of America, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton commended the people of Ireland as they celebrate St. Patrick's Day this March 17th, 2011.

"The bonds between our two nations stretch back to the beginnings of both republics, and the ties of kinship, history, and shared values run deep," Secretary Clinton said.

Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated internationally on the 17th of March as an official feast holiday in the Republic of Ireland and in the Irish diaspora. St. Patrick (AD 387-461) is the patron saint of Ireland, as observed by the Anglican Communion, the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church.

Americans celebrate St Patrick's Day as an occasion to commemorate their personal connections to Ireland and the noble contributions Ireland’s daughters and sons have made to make the United States of America better.

Secretary Clinton said, "St. Patrick’s Day unites our countries by a shared appreciation for the Irish spirit. Please accept my best wishes for another year of peace and prosperity. Erin go Brag'h!
