President Barack Obama on the House Passage of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010
"I applaud the House for passing, with bipartisan support, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010. Legislative repeal is supported by the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The process contained in this legislation allows for a smooth and responsible repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in a way that maintains good order and discipline in our military ranks. Indeed, all of the Service Chiefs have said that when this law is changed , they will implement an orderly transition effectively and efficiently. As the comprehensive study by the Department of Defense clearly shows, we can move to a new policy in a responsible manner that ensures our military strength and our national security.
I particularly want to thank Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Congressman Patrick Murphy for their leadership on this issue. I have consistently called for the repeal of this law. Moving forward with the repeal is not only the right thing to do, it will also give our military the clarity and certainty it deserves. We must ensure that Americans who are willing to risk their lives for their country are treated fairly and equally by their country."

"A JOURNEY THAT BEGAN WITH ONE STEP"
Posted and Written by Karen Ann Carr
_________________________________________________________WASHINGTON, DC- In the morning at about 9:34 AM, President Barack Obama made his way over to Blair House for the CEO meeting in about 25 degree weather. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss strategies for growing the American economy, creating jobs in the private sector, and a discussion about investment in American innovation.
Todays CEO meeting is a continuation of the ongoing dialogue President Obama and American’s leading corporate administrators have had for almost two years. The dialogue began very early on, when President Obama invite approximately 100 successful American CEO’s to the White House to let them know that he was open to their ideas about moving America beyond the economic and financial challenges of the moment.
President Obama talked with the corporate leaders in the East Room of the White House. Conveying to them that he had established “an open-door policies” that applied to them, in relationship to moving America beyond financial challenges. The CEO’s were invited to share ideas with President Obama to shift the looming financial and economic melt-down being experienced in the United States of America.
That particular day, the CEO’s arrived and waited for President Obama very calmly without a great deal of openly expressed awe. After President Obama completed his formal discourse he walked down the center aisle of the East Room between rows of chairs, reaching-out to shake the hand of each CEO.
Todays, closed-door dialogue will include a discussion about global competitiveness, ways to strengthen the U.S. economy, strengthening of U.S. financial recovery, and spurring private sector hiring.
Just beyond the White House Northwest Gate President Obama's brief comment to waiting press was: "I am looking forward to getting good ideas from them, but I am definitely going to talk to them about how we can get more hiring out there."
President Obama ignored a follow-up question, about free trade.Valerie Jarrett and Austan Goolsbee walked down the White House circular driveway to the meeting; and when the subject of the weather came up, the coatless Goolsbee played the old 'I'm-from-Chicago' card saying; "This is like spring time."
Tim Geithner and Larry Summers also strolled to the Blair House CEO meeting at approximately 9:24 a.m. When Geithner was asked what he hoped to accomplish with the CEO's, Secretary Geithner replied: "How you guys doing?"
Before going into the CEO meeting President Obama said, "This morning, I hope to elicit ideas from these business leaders that will help us not only climb out of recession, but seize the promise of this moment -– ideas about tax reform; ideas about a balanced approach to regulation that will promote, rather than undermine, growth; ideas that will help encourage businesses to invest in America and American jobs at a time when they’re holding nearly $2 trillion on their books. I want to discuss our shared mission of building a strong economy for the long run."
"And we need to redouble our commitment to fiscal discipline and address our long-term deficit challenges" President Obama said.
But the Obama administration does not seem to be able to give a tremendous amount of attention to fiscal discipline at this time because the needs of the American people and American corporations are so great.
Today, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is traveling to New York City.
At 11:00 AM, Vice President Biden will chair a United Nations Security Council High-Level Meeting on Iraq. The purpose of which is to "recognize and reinforce the tremendous progress that the Republic of Iraq has made and to discuss ways in which Members can continue to support Iraq’s government and people" the WHite House said.
Later in the day, Vice President Biden will return to Washington, DC.

THE U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
ON TAX CUTS AND CEOs MEETING
Eisenhower Executive Office Building
Room 430
9:23 A.M. EST
IN HIS OWN WORDS
"Good morning, everybody. Today, the Senate is poised to pass tax cuts and unemployment insurance, putting the House of Representatives in the position to send me this critical economic package so I can sign it into law.
I am absolutely convinced that this tax cut plan, while not perfect, will help grow our economy and create jobs in the private sector. It will help lift up middle-class families, who will no longer need to worry about a New Year’s Day tax hike. It will offer emergency relief to help tide folks over until they find another job. And it includes tax cuts to make college more affordable; help parents provide for their children; and help businesses, large and small, expand and hire.
I know there are different aspects of this plan to which members of Congress on both sides of the aisle object. That’s the nature of compromise. But we worked hard to negotiate an agreement that’s a win for middle-class families and a win for our economy, and we can’t afford to let it fall victim to either delay or defeat. So I urge members of Congress to pass these tax cuts as swiftly as possible.
Getting that done is an essential ingredient in spurring economic growth over the short run. And spurring economic growth is what I’ll talk about later this morning when I meet with some of America’s top business leaders. That includes Jim McNerney of Boeing, who also heads up my Export Council, and several members of my Economic Recovery Advisory Board. This is one of many discussions we’ll be having in the months ahead to find new ways to spur hiring, put Americans back to work and move our economy forward.
As I said when I was running for President and as I’ve said since, I believe that the primary engine of America’s economic success is not government. It’s the ingenuity of America’s entrepreneurs. It’s the dynamism of our markets. And for me, the most important question about an economic idea is not whether it’s good short-term politics or meets somebody’s litmus test. It’s whether it will help spur businesses, jobs and growth.
That’s why I’ve set a goal of doubling U.S. exports in the next five years -- to create more jobs selling more products abroad. That’s why I’m so pleased that earlier this month, after intensive negotiations, we finalized a trade agreement with our ally South Korea that will boost the annual exports of American goods by $11 billion -- a deal that, all told, will support at least 70,000 American jobs. It’s an agreement that’s won support from business and labor because it’s good for the economy.
This morning, I hope to elicit ideas from these business leaders that will help us not only climb out of recession, but seize the promise of this moment -– ideas about tax reform; ideas about a balanced approach to regulation that will promote, rather than undermine, growth; ideas that will help encourage businesses to invest in America and American jobs at a time when they’re holding nearly $2 trillion on their books. I want to discuss our shared mission of building a strong economy for the long run.
We know some of what we need to do to out-compete other countries in the 21st century. We need to offer our children the best education in the world. We need to spur innovation and new industries like clean energy that will create the jobs of tomorrow. We need to upgrade America’s crumbling infrastructure, its roads and bridges, update high-speed rail and high-speed Internet to connect every community. And we need to redouble our commitment to fiscal discipline and address our long-term deficit challenges.
We know the path that will lead to economic success. The only question is whether we will take it, whether we have the political will to do the work. I’m committed to taking that path. I know America’s business leaders are as well. And I look forward to talking to them this morning and working with them in the months and years to come to make sure that we’re adopting the best ideas for growing our economy and making the 21st century another great American Century.
Thank you very much, everybody."

Statement by the Press Secretary Robert Gibbs
on political stunt by Senator DeMint about the New START Treaty
"This is a new low in putting political stunts ahead of our national security, and it is exactly the kind of Washington game-playing that the American people are sick of. While some express concern that the Senate doesn’t have time to debate the Treaty, Senator DeMint wants to waste 12 hours to read the text of a treaty that has been available to every member of the Senate and the public for more than eight months. This Treaty has been the subject of nearly 20 Senate hearings and 1,000 questions, and is supported by President George H.W. Bush, every living Republican Secretary of State, our NATO allies, and the military leadership of the United States of America. Every minute that the START Treaty is being read on the Senate floor increases the time that we lack verification of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. It is the height of hypocrisy to complain that there is not enough time to consider this Treaty, while wasting so much time reading aloud a document that was submitted to the Senate months ago."
